Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) are a widely used antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication. These drugs are becoming increasingly common, with over 5% of Canadians taking some form of antidepressants.
At a school like UofT, there are not only a large number of students taking these medications, but also a lot of students who probably should be.
We spoke with Josephine Swift, a Computer Science specialist and new user of Prozac, an SSRI.
”It’s crazy how much it has helped my day-to-day life. Back in first year, I used to show up to every lecture, midterm, and exam with at least six to eight pencils in fear that all of them
would break. Now, after dozens of therapy sessions and properly dosed medication, I only bring two.”
All across campus, students are breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and sharing their stories of their improved psyche. Students prescribed these medications have reported significant decreases in Robarts Commons breakdowns, Brown Food Truck binges, and time spent choosing a going-out-top.
Wherever you are in your mental health journey, anyone can appreciate an inspiring and heartwarming story like Josephine’s.
All jokes aside, the Boundary staff loves you and values your mental health. If you or a loved one has been bringing eight pencils to your exams, consider seeking help!
